Bedford

If rich history, bucolic estates, bridle paths, picturesque county roads and easy accessibility to all of Westchester and New York City appeal to you, Bedford is the place to be.

The Town of Bedford encompasses three distinct hamlets of Bedford Village, Bedford Hills and Katonah. The original 1680 Bedford settlement was in Bedford Village in the southeastern portion of the town, with its historic buildings dating to the 18th and early 19th centuries. The town served as the county seat of Westchester County during the American Revolutionary War after the Battle of White Plains, until Bedford was burned by the British in July 1779. Built in 1787, Westchester County's oldest government building is the Court House in Bedford Village, which was renovated in the 1960s and is now a museum.

While its citizens include countless celebrities and high fliers from the world of business and politics, the town offers all of its residents a low-key and sumptuous style of country living. The town radiates outwards from its village green (included on both the New York State and the National Register of Historic Places in 1972) and clusters of historic houses to include charming homes and estates of numerous styles and sizes. Winding its way through the community are over one hundred miles of well-maintained riding trails. And while there is great diversity in its inhabitants, Bedford offers its residents a strong feeling of community.
