My real estate career started back in the summer of 1985.I worked for an excellent agency in Flushing Queens called First Choice.
It was a simmering summer day in July, and I wore a suit and drove a 15-year-old chocolate brown Delta 88. It was my first listing appointment, and I was beyond nervous but supercharged! That is until my jalopy broke down near Queens College, a good three miles away from the property near Kissena Park. The listing had expired (meaning that it hasn’t found its new family yet, and that’s where I come in).
Sweating bullets in the heat, clueless about what I was doing but physically fit, I ran the distance and made the 1:00 appointment on time.
Mr. Signorelli answers the door, gardening tools in his hand and a machete knife proudly visible under his armpit. Gulp me!
In a thick Neapolitan accent, he asked, “why are you here? I’m not going to sign anything!”
Fighting through sweat, possible tears, and some trepidation (large knives can do that to you), I asked if I could come in for water and explained how I hustled my buns to get there.
We sat down, and he offered me a glass of grappa- who am I to say no. The conversation went like this:
Mr. S- What, no books, no paper, what are you going to tell me?
Me- The truth. I just started, work for an outstanding agency and am hungry. If you hire me, I will get your house sold.
Mr. S- That’s it?
Me- Yup, may I have more grappa!
At 4:15, I returned to my office on Main St, head held down, shoulders slumped and looking wilted. My broker smiled and said, keep at it- you’ll be fine.
Can you imagine his surprise when I told him that not only am I getting the listing but also another rental property that Mr. S owned!
Thirty-six years later and I still find ways to help, honor and support my clients. There are no substitutes for integrity, authenticity, desire, and commitment!
